LUCA Science Announces Oral Presentation at the 75th Annual Congress of the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology 2023 (JSOG 2023)

LUCA Science (LUCA), a pre-clinical stage biotechnology company pioneering a unique modality with intracellular mitochondria organelles as bio-therapeutics, announced the company will give oral presentations at the upcoming JSOG 2023 in Tokyo, Japan on May 12-14, 2023.

Presentation details are as follows:

Title:

Increasing Cellular Placental Growth Factor (PlGF) using isolated mitochondria: A potential treatment for Fetal Growth Restriction (FGR)

Presenter:

Dr. Yosuke Matsumiya, LUCA Science UK

Summary:

FGR (affecting ≈8% of pregnancies) is the commonest cause of stillbirth with no treatment other than close monitoring and delivery. A major cause of FGR is placental insufficiency with increased oxidative stress and evidence supporting dysfunctional mitochondrial function. We demonstrate that mitochondria isolated from PBMC can enter placental BeWo cells and significantly increase placental growth factor (PlGF) – a clinically used marker for placental wellbeing.

Goal:

Our long-term goal is to leverage the fact that the baby’s mitochondria are exclusively inherited from the mother, and thus using isolated functional mitochondria from maternal PBMCs could open a potential therapy for FGR.

Dr. Matsumiya received the “JSOG Congress Award” from the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology with this presentation.
